Annulling The Iran Deal: A Dangerous Strategic Mistake

$

US' allies France, Germany, and Britain -- along with Russia and China, who are signatories to the deal -- are sternly objecting to the nullification of the deal and will not support imposition of new sanctions. Abandoning the deal will leave the US completely isolated, undermine global security, and strain its relationship with allies, which are already under mounting stress because of Trump's unseemly and erratic behavior.

Bump Stock Ban Boogie: The Latest Silly Political Dance Craze

Republican politicians and the National Rifle Association are already jumping on the bump stock ban wagon. I'm not surprised. There's no "there" there. The whole idea is even dumber, and less pernicious in effect, than the 1994 ban on "assault weapons" (defined as guns that people like Dianne Feinstein think look scary).

Zbigniew Brzezinski, the man who'd sacrificed Sima Wali's Afghanistan to give the Soviet Union its own Vietnam, passed on four months earlier in the same city where Sima lived until her death. If they should meet in the afterlife, one can easily imagine how delightfully uncomfortable that encounter would be for Zbig!

Isn't it time for this $ 700 billion gorilla to be put back in its cage? Isn't it time to cut that ridiculous spending in half, for argument sake, and use the $ 350 billion to deal with those aforementioned needs we have? Imagine if we get our own economic house in order, get the hell OUT of the rest of the world with our jackboot and its WMD threats, and join in fair and balanced trade deals.

Fifty years ago Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his last book, "Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?" Reading it again, in the hate-filled Trump era, brings the painful recognition that in many regards the civil rights struggle has stagnated for decades.

As Jeremy Corbyn knows, dealing with the US is not about merely "disagreeing." The US is a rapacious, rogue power that ought not to be regarded as a natural ally of any state championing human rights, irrespective of whether Trump or anyone else is President.

The many anomalies in the Israel Lobby's power pass unremarked. For example, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) defines criticism of Israeli policies as defamation and brands critics "anti-semites." In other words, the ADL itself is set up in the business of defamation or name-calling.

The Last Viet Nam War: Who Won?"

Ken Burns' self-styled documentary, "The Viet Nam War," has set off a large number of commentaries, on the film and the accompanying book, on the War, on the U.S. role, on the aftermath, and etc. One question about the horror (primarily for the people of Indo-China, most especially Viet Nam) that isn't often asked is "who won?" The conventional wisdom is that the U.S. lost. This column presents the case that the U.S. won.

If we suffer through a catastrophic war with Iran, many people might begin to ask "Why?" We Americans will stand by mutely as we begin to wonder what has happened to our country. And some who are more perceptive will even begin to ask why a tiny client state has been allowed to manipulate and bring ruin on the world's only super power. Unfortunately, at that point, it will be too late to do anything about it.

Donald Trump's passion for cruelty

What's different about Trump is that he revels in the use of violence and war-mongering brutality to inflict humiliation and pain on people. He pulls the curtains away from a systemic culture of cruelty and a racially inflected mass- incarceration state. He publicly celebrates his own sadistic investment in violence as a source of pleasure.

A Better Human Story # 9-- Understanding Evil

In our times, a destructive force has arisen quite visibly in the American power structure. Trump is of course part of it, but he is also a symptom and product of what has been emerging on the right for years. Liberal America has been blind to this bigger picture-- a blindness that has enabled that force to gain power. Here's a way of understanding "evil": a coherent force that spreads a pattern of brokenness-- call it "evil."
